The holiday season is upon us and many of us need a well-deserved break after the difficult year we leave behind. What is better than kicking your feet up and relax to prepare for the new year to come? With that being said, the holiday season can also pose some risks and hazards when it comes to leaving your business behind. The holiday season means there can be an increase in burglaries. Also, if you live in a very hot climate there can also be an increase in fires. To help you have more peace of mind we have put together a list of security tips for businesses.
Safety & Security Tips for Businesses
- Unplug / Turn off any unnecessary electronics
This will help to avoid the chance of an electrical fire starting. If there are any electronics that you wish to keep on be sure to carefully examine them and make sure that there are no kinks and open electrical wires.
2. Make sure your business has adequate lighting
One of the main causes of an increase in burglaries is the lack of proper lighting. Make sure all your exterior doors and gates are well lit during the night when it is dark. Leave some lights on around the property so that you can see any intruders.
3. Lock up thoroughly
This is quite “an obvious” one but the most important. Remember to lock all doors and double-check all points of entry and close all the windows properly.
4. Inform your landlord/neighborhood watch/neighboring business owners/security company
If you are renting an office space or warehouse let your landlord know so that they are aware that you are away. If you have a security system installed be sure to let your security company know that they can help keep watch for any potential threats.
5. Invest in a security system
If you haven’t already, it is of utmost importance to invest in a proper security system. A CCTV security system is one of the best ways to keep intruders out and you can also keep an eye on the property on your laptop or mobile. Even just having your security system sign up on the wall will help keep intruders out.
VERY IMPORTANT: If you have an alarm system installed, test and double-check that your alarm system is in 100% working order and remember to switch it on when you leave.
6. Double check fire equipment protection
Fires are one of the largest emergencies during the holiday season. To help keep your business safe make sure your fire detection equipment is in working order along with any other fire emergency equipment like strobe lights, fire sprinkler systems and fire alarms.
7. Move valuables away from windows
Ensure that any valuable and expensive equipment are moved away from windows and covered with something. This will help decrease the chances of intruders breaking through windows to get to the equipment. Also, if they don’t know what is inside they won’t necessarily want to break in.
Hopefully, these tips will help you prepare for your holiday ahead and so that you can sit back, relax and have a stress-free holiday.
